HEALTH CARE - A NEW AGENDA

(For more articles on the Prince Albert Health District click HERE)

How are you? These three words are a greeting found in all languages from ancient to modern times. The response may vary, but this concern for the health and welfare of each individual is, was and will always be a universal concern. Every community strives to provide the best health care services possible for each member, today and in the future.

The Prince Albert District Health Board provides health care services for more than 53,000 people in Prince Albert and the surrounding area. No easy task. Facilities and services must provide for the needs of each individual from newborn to dying. Services must respect cross-cultural differences, rural and urban development and must be beneficial to the whole community.

During the past two and one-half years, the Health Board examined the existing health care system and found it ailing. Surgery was performed, some pain and discomfort was felt, but the prognosis for recovery is excellent. The Prince Albert District Health Board now has the resources to build and modernize district health care facilities. There will be a new long term care facility in Prince Albert, a new health centre for Birch Hills and Prince Albert's Victoria Hospital will be renovated.

A shift in emphasis from institutional to home care services cut the average hospitalization stay and waiting time for admissions. Encouraging community involvement, the Prince Albert District Health Board held public forums to identify problems and provide ideas for new programs and a new definition of health care for this district. Promoting healthy lifestyles and illness prevention are the cornerstones upon which a stronger and healthier community will be created. With the proper tools, each individual can improve his own health and contribute to the general wellbeing of the entire community. The proper tools for good health are public awareness, education and information.

Building an effective information network that reaches out to each member of the community is quite a challenge. Illustrative pamphlets cover health concerns from prenatal to palliative care. Information on family problems, drug and substance abuse, violence against women, children and old people show how to deal with these situations and where to find help. These publications are available at all the Prince Albert Health District facilities at no charge.

Developing new and effective Health Improvement Initiatives is also a priority. To date, seventeen projects have been approved and detailed information on each project is outlined in the Prince Albert Health District November 1994 Community Report. One of these initiatives is the HEALTH HELP LINE which provides instant access to information and health services within the district. The line also gives district residents an opportunity to voice their concerns and complaints about the health care services they receive. The P.A. District Health Board is committed to providing the health care services that reflect the needs and resources of our community today and tomorrow.

HEALTH CONFERENCE

Saskatchewan Provincial Palliative Care Conference: "Only Good Dreams" - Thursday 6 and Friday 7 APRIL at the Marlboro Inn. Speakers: Honorable Louise Simard, Dr. David Kuhl, Phil Lane, Marlene Jackson, Muriel Montbriand, Velda Clark & Peggy Schellenberg. To comfort not cure. This is a simple definition of the meaning of palliative care. The Prince Albert Palliative Care Association was formed to provide comfort and ease the pain of incurable illness for terminal patients and their families. This two day conference has chosen the Ojibwa Dream Catcher to symbolize the goals of the conference and the Associations. As the Dream Catcher traps all bad dreams in its web to perish with the light of the day, while the good dreams slip through the centre and down the feathers to the dreamer - the goal of palliative care is to give everyone "only good dreams." For information/registration Onnalee Stuckel (h.) 764-4136 (w.) 763-6464 or Linda Kemp (w.) 922-2969.
