PRINCE ALBERT SKATING CLUB

Figure skating in Prince Albert has been on thin ice many times but it has always made a come-back. In 1937 the first club was formed by a group of enthusiasts but it was not until 1946 that the club had their first "professional". Economic recessions, loss of facilities through fire, and competition for the limited rink resources all took their toll but the club skated on. Two club members have received their triple gold levels and one illustrious skaters, Sandra Mooney, was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for her contributions as a skater, teacher and promoter of figure skating locally, in Iceland and in the Yukon. The P.A. Skating Club generally uses the facilities at the Dave Steuart Arena (Exhibition Grounds). The goals of the club are: to promote figure skating, good sportsmanship and club spirit; to stimulate interest and to provide equal opportunity for all skaters to achieve potential while keeping costs to a minimum. Registration is still open for all ages and levels, starting with Can Skate, (a learn to skate class for ages 4 and up), Can Figure, Junior and Senior programs. More information is available from Marlene Barzeele, Registrar, at 764-6878 or from Lorne Ramstead, President, at 764-6640.

SKATING TO THE OLYMPICS - DECEMBER 1 - 4, 1993

From November 12th to 14th, British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan will be holding competitions and the top four skaters from each province will advance to the Western Championships being held in Prince Albert the first week in December. The winners will proceed to the Canadian finals in Edmonton in January and the top Canadian skaters will go on to the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway. World Champion and Olympic calibre skater, Kurt Browning, will compete in Prince Albert along with other top Canadians including Marcus Christiensen, Tanya Bingert, Lisa Sargeant-Driscoll and Susan Anne Humphries. Competition events will be held at the Comuniplex starting Thursday December 2nd while the Dave Steuart and Kinsmen Arenas will be used as practice rinks. Tickets are available from the P.A. THE CONVENTION CENTRE OPENS

The old Elk's Hall on 2nd Avenue and 17th Street West has disappeared. In its place, the Convention Centre rises, shining and elegant. Outside, the parking facilities have been expanded and paved. The new facade is dotted with charming canopies that hint at the beautiful decor to be found inside. The large banquet hall, full of old world elegance, is aptly named the Victoria Ballroom and the crystal chandeliers, mirrors and Italian Renaissance wallpaper add soft romantic tones. The smaller but tastefully decorated Board Room has become, for the opening, an art gallery and exhibition centre for talented artists from our community. Finally Prince Albert has a new and complete catering facility for any occasion. A touch of European style provides an ideal setting for business meetings, seminars, reunions, parties and intimate gatherings as well as the perfect atmosphere for weddings, conferences, banquets and grand celebrations. The opening festivities begin on October 27th with an invitation only gala reception and ribbon cutting ceremony. On October 28th and 29th, the doors will be opened to the public and everyone is invited to attend an Open House 4pm to 8pm.

    CRIME STOPPERS

Formed in April 1985 in Prince Albert, modelled on the international program in force since the early eighties, the Crime Stoppers award system successfully unites the police, the media and citizens of our city in the fight against crime. This non-profit organization, funded through donations, promotes public awareness and offers cash rewards of up to $2,000 for information leading to arrests or recovery of stolen property. This innovative project has an elected Board of Directors made up of 17 professionals who volunteer their time and meet monthly with police representatives to decide on strategy, education, advertising, event re-activation, and compensation. If you want to know more about the program call Community Relations Officer Cpl. Howard Darbyshire 953-4233. If you have information about a crime call 922-TIPS (8477). Your call will not be recorded or traced, you will not have to reveal your identity nor testify in court and you may receive an award.
