On JULY 18th the third edition of the North American Indigenous Games will begin in Prince Albert. Four thousand young native athletes will compete in fifteen sporting events from archery to wrestling, until JULY 25th. CENTENNIAL 1893-1993 - JULY 29 CELEBRATION DAY
The former Prince Albert City Hall and today the Arts Centre - 1010 Central Ave. - is celebrating 100 years. This building is one of the few 19th century town halls still standing on the Prairies. It was built in 1892-1893 by A. and W.B. Goodfellow Builders (the architect is unknown) two years after the first railway arrived in town and over ten years before Prince Albert was incorporated as a city. Like many town halls of the period, it housed a variety of facilities including an opera house (for public lectures, political debates, magic lantern shows, dramatic productions and a stage for occasional guest artists) and large meeting room in addition to the municipal offices. It's substantial size, brick-clad exterior and clock tower reflected the town's pride in its status as an important territorial centre and its faith in a prosperous future. Council meetings were held there until 1969. Stylistically, the building is of Victorian design, with Italian accents. JULY 26th to August 1st Prince Albert Heritage Week. For more information on the Centennial Celebration:Lorri Dionne 953-4811 or Shirley Barg 953-4385.
