  • September 7: Little Gallery Artist Talk with Ana Rose, 7:00pm. “Since coming to Saskatchewan in 1989, I have been working in my studio in painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. Different media are chosen, depending on the formal requirements of the work and the social and political ideas that inform the project. Ten years ago, I was making self portraits that were informed by issues that women face when they paint. Since then, my travels have generated sculptural pieces about the industrial use of land, primarily forestry practices, and the divergent interests of various groups like environmentalists, holiday makers and corporations. These pieces include Little Worlds and the Perfect Deck in 1998 and Critical Sites in Estevan in 1999. Shopping Plaza Removed To Make Way For Swamp is a larger elaboration of these thoughts. It is an extensive installation examining the removal of a mall and it’s replacement with a nature park. For the last several years, I have also been fascinated by the business community, the characters who people it and the press that cover it. Big Boys is the result. Two other projects are in development. One includes very large drawings, the other describes endangered species moving into local communities from which human residents have been displaced. Humour, examining the flipside of perceived facts, an abiding interest in the earth and her creatures, along with an irrepressible need for mark making, all propel my work.” Ana Rose. For more info call 306-763-7080.

  • August 31 to September 19: Wigwas: The Art of Birch Bark Biting
This exhibition presents birch bark bite prints or Wigwas. First Nations women in northern Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario create these images by biting on the inner layers of birch bark. Born in Beaver Lake, Manitoba in 1924, Angelique Merasty was one of the most accomplished artists in this medium. Her delicate images of flowers, animals and insects continue to inspire artists today. Thanks to the MacKenzie Art Gallery Outreach Program for the loan of this exhibition.

  • Until October 8: Big Boys by Ana Rose
Opening/Artist Talk: Friday Sept. 7 at 7:00pm. Aurated by Like Keith.
Ana Rose's has painted uncommissioned portraits of the "Big Boys" of business, the successful heads of corporations which are constantly in the news. She has, based on newspaper photos, captured intense joyful expressions on their faces that make them seem strangely human, normal, even goofy and needy. Rose combines this emotional portrayal with factual information on trading cards, revealing their reason for exuberance, their salaries, share values, stock market performance sobering figures when compared to the viewers income. "The Big Boy project is a critique of Big Business. It looks at portraiture as newspaper clipping, fine art oil painting, and trading card. It underlines the gap between ordinary citizens and business men who live in a world constructed by controlled imagery. It makes plain the conflict I feel about being involved in a world in which a few individuals and their corporations have too much power and it stresses the support these men receive from a media that champion their world view." Rose
