Mary Lynn Currier at the start.
New Haven course record holder Colleen De Reuck leads just past the eight-mile mark.
De Reuck ran 1:05:11 in 1998, when she was still a South African citizen.
Marla Runyan lagged behind De Reuck by about nine seconds at this point on the course.
Team USA Minnesota's Katie McGregor runs in third place.
Deeja Youngquist runs well in fourth place.
Youngquist, a '99 graduate of the University of Washington, has been having a good year.
Turena Johnson Lane runs in fourth place just past the eight-mile mark.
Johnson Lane is a '97 graduate of Luther College, where she was a five-time DIII national champion.
Johnson Lane is now the head cross country coach at Georgia Southern University.
Colleen De Reuck led Marla Runyan by a few seconds with just a few blocks remaining in the race...
...but Runyan used her blazing track speed to run down De Reuck.
Runyan finished in an American Record-setting 1:05:52, with De Reuck second in 1:05:53.
Runyan and De Reuck both destroyed the previous record of 1:07:07, set by Trina Painter in 1985.
This race served as the USA 20k Championships and therefore attracted a quality field.
Katie McGregor finished third in 1:07:53.
McGregor finished third in the 10,000m at the USA T&F Championships in June...
...but did not have the "A" standard necessary to run at the World Championships.
Deeja Youngquist ran a strong race to finish fourth in 1:08:47.
