The 31st running of the New York Mini gets underway.
The frontrunners include #14 Jen Rhines, #1 Deena Drossin and #2 Sonia O'Sullivan.
Also up there is #3 Lornah Kiplagat.
Kiplagat and O'Sullivan move into the lead.
O'Sullivan and Kiplagat lead the stream of runners up Central Park West.
Behind O'Sullivan and Kiplagat are #8 Olivera Jevtic of Yugoslavia and Asmae Leghzaoui of Morocco.
O'Sullivan hails from Ireland and Kiplagat from Kenya.
Kiplagat runs her own training camp for women in Kenya. The camp was recently featured in this article.
Jevtic, Leghzaoui, Drossin, Ejagayou Dibaba, Eyerusalem Kuma and Ludmila Petrova trail O'Sullivan and Kiplagat.
The leaders passed through the mile in 4:51, eight seconds ahead of Paula Radcliffe's pace during her record-setting run a year ago.
As they headed into Central Park, a pack of three - Kiplagat, Leghzaoui and O'Sullivan began to break away. Drossin led the second pack
Shortly after the group of three broke away, it became a group of two, with Sonia O'Sullivan dropping off th pace.
Asmae Leghzaoui and Lornah Kiplagat passed through two miles in 9:42, 16 seconds ahead of Paula Radcliffe's pace a year ago.
At this point, Kiplagat seemed to be the one who was controlling the pace.
