Melissa Donais of Phillips Andover Academy shoots straight to the lead in the girls' high school mile.
Michelle Rorke of Bronxville, NY runs just ahead of Megan Olds of Gloversville, NY.
Donais was by no means the favorite here and her aggressive strategy looked like one that might backfire.
Spectators waited for the pack to swallow Donais up, but it never happened.
Olds runs ahead of Elizabeth Maloy of the Academy of Holy Names (Albany, NY).
Donais went through the half mile in 2:24 and the pack wasn't getting any closer.
Meghan Owen of Killingly High School in Danielson, CT leads Maloy and Rorke.
Owen was a 2000 Foot Locker finalist and has been a dominant runner in Connecticut.
Donais won the 1999 Foot Locker Northeast Regional as a sophomore but was a non-qualifier in 2000 and 2001.
Donais recently broke 5:00 in the mile for the first time - on January 19 (her birthday) at Yale.
Clara Horowitz, another 2000 Foot Locker Finalist, leads the pack.
Laura Stanley of the Carolina Day School in Asheville, NC finished fifth at the 2001 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships.
Horowitz was one of three Duke-bound girls in this race. Laura Stanley and Sally Meyerhoff have also signed letters of intent.
Elizabeth Maloy finished sixth in 4:59.86.
Horowitz said after the race that she thought that Donais was the rabbit.
Horowitz attends the Head Royce School in Oakland, CA and has the distinction of being one of Regina Jacobs' training partners.
Liz Gesel, another of the 2001 Foot Locker Finalists, ran a good race tactically, finishing second in 4:57.80.
Gesel and Horowitz lead the pack with Donais (not pictured) still running in first.
Megan Olds finished eighth in 5:06.28 on the not-so-fast 160 yard track.
Sally Meyerhoff of Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix, Arizona was also a 2001 Foot Locker Finalist.
