Ben Kimondiu, who was originally supposed to be a pacer, runs ahead of Paul Tergat, who was making his much-anticipated U.S. marathon debut.
Kimondiu felt good and decided to go the whole way, winning in 2:08:52, four seconds ahead of Tergat.

Noriaki Igarashi finished 5th in 2:09:35.
Rod DeHaven was the first American, running a PR 2:11:40 for sixth.
Catherine Ndereba started slowly after not seeing the first several mile markers. She had company in Elfenesh Alemu and Lornah Kiplagat.
