With approximately 3/4 of a mile to go, the surprise leader is Margaret Okayo.
Okayo, the reigning NYC Marathon Champion, pulls away from Catherine Ndereba.
Okayo went on to win in the fourth fastest time ever (and a Boston course record) of 2:20:43.
Catherine Ndereba, the two-time champion here and current world record holder, runs second.
Ndereba's 2:21:12 was the fastest non-winning time ever in a women's marathon.
Elfenesh Alemu finished third, nearly five minutes later, in 2:26:01.
Sun Yingjie of China finished fourth in 2:27:26.
Firaya Sultanova, 40, won the masters race and finished 5th overall in 2:27:58.
Bruna Genovese of Italy runs with Christian Zwicky and Keven O'Neil.
Genovese finished sixth in 2:29:02.
Nuta Olaru of Romania runs with Naoki Hirasawa of Japan.
Olaru finished seventh in 2:30:26.
Mai Tagami of Japan finished eighth in 2:32:00.
Gitte Karlshoj, 42, finished second in the masters race and ninth overall in 2:35:01.
Yukari Komatsu of Japan finished 10th in 2:35:34.
Michael Rosenthal runs ahead of Jackie Gallagher of Australia.
Gallagher finished 11th in 2:35:46.
Irina Timofeyeva of Russia finished 12th in 2:36:47.
Jill Gaitenby was the top American for the second year in a row, finishing 13th in 2:38:55.
Gaitenby called it her first "disastrous" marathon.
