At the start of the race, Olympic Champion Naoko Takahashi and world record holder Tegla Loroupe pose for a photo.
The start.
Takahashi went to Berlin intending to take a stab at Loroupe's marathon world record of 2:20:43, set in Berlin three years ago. At 21 miles, Loroupe was 90 seconds behind Takahashi, but Loroupe faded in the final miles, running 2:28:02 for second.
Takahashi had plenty of pacers and guards helping her along the course.

Takahashi becomes the first woman to break 2:20 in the marathon, running 2:19:46.
