As the runners approached the 6-mile mark, the surprise leader was Adriana Fernandez.
Fernandez, who had a baby eight months ago, won in 31:56. Esther Kiplagat was second in 31:58.
This was the first time in the history of the race that Catherine Ndereba did not win Beach to Beacon.
The four-time champion finished third this year in 32:07.
Milena Glusac was the top American, finishing fourth in 32:39.
Colleen DeReuck finished fifth in 32:48.
DeReuck was a bronze medallist at the World Cross Country Championships earlier this year.
Gladys Asiba of Royersford, PA and Kenya finished sixth in 33:44.
Susannah Beck, a Maine native who now lives in Eugene, OR, finished seventh in 33:47.
Beck grew up in Yarmouth, ME, about 20 miles away.
Margarita Tapia of Mexico City, Mexico finished eighth in 33:52.
Edna Kiplagat, 22, of Kenya finished 10th in 34:18.
Elana Fidatof, 42, of Romania finished ninth in 34:14 and was the first masters runner.
Keene State standout Mary Proulx, 21, of Ashland, NH finished 11th in 35:29.
Proulx, who won the NCAA Division III 5,000m and 10,000m titles in the spring, will be a senior this fall.
Molly Taber of Boxford, MA finished 12th in 35:56.
Taber again.
Christine Snow-Reaser won $1,000 for being the top Maine woman. She was 13th among all women in 36:30.
Kathryn Martin, 50, of Northport, NY finished 14th in 36:49. She won the 50-54 age group and was the second 40+ runner.
Jenna Richardson, a recent Brown graduate, finished second among Maine women in 36:58.
