Jelena Prokopcuka and Tatiana Hladyr run in the lead together at 30K (about 18.6 miles into the race). For much of the race, Hladyr was misidentified by the TV announcers as a pacesetter.
Running about 90 seconds behind Prokopcuka and Hladyr at 30K is the chase pack of women, including Catherine Ndereba, Lidiya Grigoryeva, Rita Jeptoo, and Deena Kastor.
About 90 seconds after the chase pack passed, Katie McGregor and New Zealand’s Jill Rillstone hit the 30K mark. After her performance and incredible seventh-place finish in this race, Rillstone decided to concentrate on the marathon.
And after another 90 seconds pass, Samia Akbar and Claudia Camargo hit 30K. Camargo finishes among the Top Ten finishers in many New York Road Runner events. This was Akbar’s first marathon.
A couple of minutes after Akbar and Camargo pass, Magda Lewy-Boulet approaches 30K, running solo. Lewy-Boulet is the mother of an 18-month-old boy named Owen and is married to Richie Boulet, one of the United States’ best milers in the 1990s.

Nikole Johns, who trains in Fort Collins, Colorado, approaches 30K, also by herself. Johns, like Lewy-Boulet, is also the mother of an 18-month-old child.
Nathalie Vasseur approaches 30K. Vasseur is a master runner from France. Last year, she placed 23rd overall in the ING New York City Marathon. This year, she finished 19th.
Jelena Prokopcuka defended her title winning this year’s race in 2:25:05.
Hladyr proved to everybody that she wasn’t a rabbit after all, finishing in second place, a minute behind Prokopcuka.
Catherine Ndereba and Rita Jeptoo finished in third and fourth place respectively. Ndereba, known by many as Catherine the Great, won the inaugural NYC Half-Marathon Presented by NIKE in August.

Russia’s Lidiya Grigoryeva and U.S. favorite Deena Kastor finished in fifth and sixth place respectively. Many American running fans were hoping that Kastor, who won the 2006 Flora London Marathon, would break the dry spell of American wins in the ING New York City Marathon. The last American woman to have won the New York City Marathon was Miki Gorman in 1977.
Amy Rudolph paced Katie McGregor at the begiing of the race. Here they are at mile 8.
This was McGregor’s debut marathon and she finished in an impressive ninth place.
Camargo finished in 13th place, the first NYRR member to cross the line. Camargo is friends with second-place finisher Hladyr. Though from different continents, they compete in several races together.
Akbar and Camargo ran much of the race together. Akbar finished just ahead of Camargo in 12th place.
