The grand opening of the new Track & Field Hall of Fame...
...at the Armory Track & Field Center was held...
...in conjunction with the 2004 New Balance Games.
The ninth annual New Balance Games featured...
...competition among many area high school runners...
...as well as a few elite races.
The Hall reportedly cost $8.5 million to complete...
...and is over 15,000 square feet. Several familiar faces...
...like nine-time New York City Marathon winner Grete Waitz (above)...
...were on hand for the opening.
A world-class track facility is housed in the same building.

The hall includes films, interactive exhibits and memorabilia from top track stars.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The girls' high school mile had a quality field, including Lindsay Ferguson (leading).
Avril Ogrodnick of Canada leads Laura Cummings of Bayshore, New York.
Heather Iatauro (4:53.79) narrowly edged out Cummings (4:53.82) for the win.
The women's mile included (L-R) Mardrea Hyman, Janet Trujillo, and Jill Snyder.

Katy Hitchcock of the NYAC sets the pace.
Hayley Tullett of Great Britain follows.
Tullett won easily (4:27.28) over Lyubov Kremlyova (4:31.65).
