Kaltenbach is the defending national champion, but she missed seven weeks of running...
...during the season, due to a stress fracture. Above: With teammate Keara Sammons.
Ramsey Kavan finished sixth at the 2003 Foot Locker XC Championships.
The temperature at race time was in the 40s and the course was very wet.
Rachel Wittum, a sophomore from Rockford, Michigan.
Lindsay Anderson, a freshman from Leeds, North Dakota, starts out quickly.
Molly Waterhouse, a freshman from Vicksburg, Michigan.
Kavan, last year's runner up at this event, was one of the favorites coming in.
Anderson eventually finished 60th in 19:36.
L-R: Waterhouse, Kavan, and Anderson.
The top eight would automatically qualify for nationals, and the ninth and 10th finishers would - for the first time...
...have a shot at going to nationals. Their fate depended on the outcome of the following week's Nike Team Nationals.
It turned out that the top 10 from this race did qualify for nationals, though no one was sure about that at the time of this race.
Above: Whitney Anderson of Colorado led for much of the race. Anderson was the Colorado state champion and had improved...
...tremendously in the previous year, after joining forces with coach Lyle Knudson.
One year earlier, Anderson finished 25th at the West Regional. She was living in Alaska at the time.
Kavan runs in second place.
