Post-Race Interview with Zoe Nelson
By Ricky Quintana

Zoe Nelson, the 2002 Foot Locker Cross Country Champion, came into this year's race hoping to score a repeat win. The race didn't go as planned, however, for the junior from Flathead High School (Kalispell, MT). This time out, Nelson finished eighth in 17:49.

Ricky Quintana: How did the race go?
Zoe Nelson:
It didn't go as well as I had hoped. I just think I didn't have it today. It was really tough out there. My legs felt a little bit tired and stuff.

RQ: You did try to make some moves. You covered the moves for the first half. What was your plan here?
ZN:
I was just trying to stay with the lead pack and hopefully gain the lead. Stay with the girls and not let them get out of my sight, and hopefully lose them a little bit.

RQ: They hung around on the moves this time. What went through your mind when those moves didn't work this time?
ZN:
When they didn't work, I just tried to stay back and conserve my energy a little bit and just stay with them. I don't know. I really didn't know what to do about it.

RQ: That side stitch. Did it come back on you?
ZN:
It did on the final downhill, but that's not why I lost today.

RQ: This is your first loss in two years. I know you've lost before. How do you look at this competition and into the future?
ZN:
I don't know, I guess everyone has to have a bad race. I'm just going to take some time off and then start training again for track. Hopefully, I'll come back next year and have a better race.
