Pre-Race Interview with Shadrack Kiptoo
By Ricky Quintana

Shadrack Kiptoo did not know much about the Foot Locker National Championships earlier this season, but he now stands as the favorite to win. He has two problems that may have cause him to think otherwise: his knee is in major pain when he runs, and it has caused him to crosstrain for much of the last month. Friday, a somewhat subdued Kiptoo discussed his chances to win Saturday's Foot Locker final.

Ricky Quintana: I understand that you've [been dealing with] injury and illness in the last few weeks. How have you been able to train the last few weeks?
Shadrack Kiptoo:
I've just been doing cross training in the pool for the past month.

RQ: How is your condition?
Kiptoo:
Right now, I'm not really in the shape I'm supposed to be. I think tomorrow, I just have to do what I can...my knee is really bad. I tried to do the warm-up and run on the course right now, but when we go downhill, it was so painful. I tried just to fall back and take it easy.

RQ: You've had a lot of injuries this past year. How have you felt about being injured so often?
Kiptoo:
It's really disappointing. Usually I don't [go] without running for two days, but I've been having a hard time with this injury. I've been feeling so out of place because I'm not running... I've just been running in the pool, that's about it.

RQ: What do you think about this Foot Locker experience?
Kiptoo:
It's a big thing. It's really awesome to be here today and run in this big meet. It's cool that I can run against the fastest kids in the nation. I think it's fantastic.

RQ: When I interviewed you last, you didn't know anything about this race. Did you expect it to be this big?
Kiptoo:
At first, I wasn't even sure if I was going to come to Foot Locker. So I didn't have any idea what Foot Locker was. I tried to imagine this big meet and I didn't have a clear understanding [of what it was like]. It's alright.

RQ: What kind of time do you think will win this race?
Kiptoo:
I'm not sure. I can't predict right now, but time will tell. The race starts and time will tell by itself.

RQ: Who do you think your main challengers will be?
Kiptoo:
I have no idea. All these guys are ready to go. I think I just need to be smart and run smart because these guys are ready.

RQ: Thanks for the interview.
SK:
I'm sorry about my English. It's not too good. (Editor's note: Actually, having spoken to Kiptoo, we've found that it's quite good.)
