Post-Race Interview with Shadrack Kiptoo
By Alison Wade

Though he's been living in Albuquerque, New Mexico for more than a year, Kenya's Shadrack Kiptoo just began to make a splash on the national high school scene this fall. Under New Mexico rules, Kiptoo was forced to sit out a year before competing for La Cueva High School. Once he was cleared, Kiptoo won a state title and the Foot Locker West Regional title; his third-place finish at the 2003 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships marked his first loss of the season. Kiptoo covered the 5k course in 14:58, three seconds behind winner Matt Withrow.

MensRacing.com: (Joining him as hangs up his cell phone) Was that Eddy you were talking to?
Shadrack Kiptoo:
Yes, it was Eddy.

MR: What did he have to say?
SK:
He said that it's alright, to understand that I've been having knee problems for the last month and I've not been training. So they were kind of happy about what I did because...[other] people are training and you're not...

MR: It's your knee? Have you gotten a diagnosis?
SK:
Yeah, my knee is so bad. It's tendonitis.

MR: Do you think you'll take some time off now?
SK:
I'll take maybe one month off, just to make it completely heal.

MR: So how do you feel about the race?
SK:
I'm pretty happy, I didn't expect to run that well... I tried to pull away... I was scared to be behind when these guys decided to surge and go, that I [wouldn't be able to] keep up with them.

MR: Was there any point when you thought you might win?
SK:
No, I knew (Matt) Withrow is good, Galen (Rupp) is good and I thought maybe Ryan Deak would be good. With running, you don't know, you just wait until [the end] and that's when you can tell who is good and who is not good. You can't predict it before you run. Even though you are in shape, you don't know what might happen in the race.

MR: You're committed to the University of New Mexico, how did you make that decision?
SK:
My career made me choose New Mexico, I'm going to [study] medicine. They have a good medical school in New Mexico, that's why I decided on it... And they have a good program for cross country and track, too.

MR: When Ricky Quintana spoke to you earlier this season, you didn't know much about Foot Locker...
SK:
Yeah, I didn't know anything about Foot Locker until I [went] to the West Regional and they said, 'You're going to [Nationals].'

MR: What do you think about the whole thing?
SK:
It's fabulous, the way the race has been organized. I've never seen a race like this...

MR: Have you been in touch with your parents lately? When will they hear about this?
SK:
No, I haven't talked to them for about a month...

MR: How do you communicate with them?
SK:
I just call them on the phone... It's kind of expensive but I have to call them [because] I have to talk to my family.

MR: Will you call them soon and let them know about this?
SK:
I'll give them a call tonight...
