Post-Race Interview with Marie Lawrence
By Ricky Quintana

Marie "Mel" Lawrence, a freshman at Reno (Nevada) High School pulled off the biggest surprise of the girls' race in finishing second to Katelyn Kaltenbach by one second. Lawrence led the race down the final hill and held a several-second lead over Kaltenbach with less than 400 meters to go, but Kaltenbach's strong kick propelled her past Lawrence in the final 100 meters and she went on to win in 17:24. Marie's sister Collier, a senior, also competed in the National Finals, finishing 19th.

Ricky Quintana: Can you go through the race for us?
Marie Lawrence:
Umm, right here (near the finish area) on the second loop, it was all still pretty close. There were like seven runners just running in a big pack. I think the hill kind of separated us all apart on the second loop, and then it was just me and Katelyn (Kaltenbach) and we were just both going for first...

RQ: Were you intimidated by this [course] at all?
ML:
Not really, because we ran Mt. SAC for Regionals and that course is just hills, hills, hills, and those hills are pretty tough.

RQ: Did you expect to be up front the whole race?
ML:
Not really. I was hoping to get like top five, top ten and when I came in second, I was just really happy still.

RQ: [On] the downhill, you sort of [pulled] away. Was that the plan for you?
ML:
Both. I like downhills and it was a plan to try to get away from everybody as much as possible.

RQ: And coming up that hill, did Katelyn have too much for you?
ML:
Yeah, I guess. She's really good and she has a nice kick, too.

RQ: Was that your best time by a lot?
ML:
I'm not sure what my time was.

RQ: It was 17:22. (Editor's Note: It was 17:25, officially.)
ML:
Yeah, that was my best time by about ten seconds, maybe.

RQ: How long have you been running?
ML:
Since seventh grade. Three years.

RQ: Did [you and Collier] plan anything differently this race? I know at the West Regional you had planned to run together, what did you guys decide for this race?
ML:
Nothing really, just go and run our race.

RQ: And who is [usually] the faster of the two [of you]?
ML:
I don't know, it's kind of even. Some days we have good races and some days we have bad races. It all depends.
