Pre-Race Interview with Christian Wagner
By Ricky Quintana

Christian Wagner had a spectacular track season last spring and capped it off with a hard-fought win in the Adidas Outdoor Championship two-mile in 8:53.91. This year, he got off to a quick start, posting an impressive win at the Midwest Meet of Champions. The senior at Columbus North High School in Columbus, Indiana then went on to win another state title and the Mid East Championships. Wagner took sixth at the Foot Locker Midwest Regional in 15:26, farther back than some expected. He spoke about his race after doing a solo run on the eve of the race.

Ricky Quintana: How are you feeling?
Christian Wagner:
I'm feeling really strong today. I was just out for a run and was feeling really good.

RQ: Did the Midwest Regional race go as you had hoped?
CW:
It qualified, so I had a pretty decent race. You had to run a pretty good time just to get out, so I'm happy with it.

RQ: What is you outlook for Foot Locker this year?
CW:
I'm just hoping I can run strong this year. I didn't have as good a race as I would have hoped last year. Hopefully, I can come back from that and have a good one this year.

RQ: Last year, you ran a monster double at your state track meet. You ran 4:07 and then came back and ran a 8:55 two hours and 40 minutes later. Are you feeling like you are in that kind of shape?
CW:
I think I'm in a little better shape than I was then, so hopefully it will be a good race. I was just feeling really good that day. It all comes down to how you are feeling that day, I guess.

RQ: What do you think about the course?
CW:
It's a pretty nice course. All the places that are on grass are just nice and flat and hard packed. It's got a couple of nice hills in it, so it should be pretty interesting.

RQ: Is there any place that is a key point to you?
CW:
Not really. It's just kind of goes as it goes. I'm just going to figure out what I'm doing once I'm out there.

RQ: What kind of time do you think will win this?
CW:
I don't know. Anywhere from 14:45 to like a 15 flat. It all depends on how the race is run and who is going to make moves at what point. We'll see tomorrow.

RQ: Who do you expect to be the guys to watch?
CW:
I'm really not sure. There are a bunch of great guys here that are going to be out hammering for it. It's just going to come down to who has it tomorrow.
