Pre-Race Interview with Brian Sullivan
By Ricky Quintana

Brian Sullivan has used his 31st place finish at last year's Foot Locker Nationals to inspire him this season. He's been Mr. Consistent all season, running in the top three in all of his major races. After an impressive 14:46 win on the lightning-quick McAlpine Greenway Park course, Sullivan is feeling much better and determined to make up for last year's race. He spoke with us at Balboa Park Friday afternoon, before grabbing lunch. After the course walk through, the athletes were given time to run, stretch, do strides, play Twister, play with a Hula Hoop, do some art, and watch a magician.

Ricky Quintana: How are you feeling?
Brian Sullivan:
I'm feeling really good. This is a nice course, nice weather out here. It should be a good race tomorrow.

RQ: Are you going to run with a little more gusto tomorrow, after last year's performance?
BS:
Yeah definitely (smiles). I don't want to finish in last place again. I'm definitely going to go out with the leaders and hang on as long as possible.

RQ: Coach Green has talked a lot about that this year. He says you've come in with more determination. Can you tell us about that?
BS:
After last year, I was kind of down for a couple of weeks, and I definitely don't want to feel that way again about a race. I'm definitely going to go out there and give it my all. I pretty much don't have anything to lose. If I stay back and try to run conservatively and don't do well, I have a lot to lose there.

RQ: There are a lot of things that happened that you didn't have control over. Your coach couldn't come at the last minute and you had some flight problems. This year's a lot different.
BS:
Yeah, my coach is here this year. A bunch of my friends are coming up. I'm friends with all the guys on the South team. It's just a lot more laid back and more comfortable than it was last year.

RQ: A lot of Texas boys.
BS:
Yeah, it's gong to be pretty cool to see how we all do.

RQ: Have you talked about this [as a team] in the last two weeks?
BS:
Yeah, we've talked about it the whole year pretty much, but the last couple of weeks, we've been talking on the internet about strategy and how we're going to do... It's definitely going to be a pretty cool race tomorrow.

RQ: Are there going to be any team tactics?
BS:
Yeah, we're definitely going to work together. We're going to do some team tactics. Pretty much, the whole South team is going to run as a pack and try not to string each other out, because when you do that, you definitely are going to hurt yourself. We're going to definitely run as a group as long as possible.

RQ: Are you sort of taking up a leadership roll since you were here last year?
BS:
I guess so. A lot of people were kind of looking up to me. I'm no different from anyone else, I think. [Having been here last year] really helps, I think.

RQ: Do you think any place on the course will be [a key factor in determining the outcome]?
BS:
I think the last half mile, coming down the hill, will definitely make or break the race. It's flat, it's the last half mile, people are just going to start going. Definitely going up the hill the second time, people are going to start dropping off. I remember that's where a lot of people started dropping off from the lead group last year. I think it's going to be the same way again, so we'll just have to take care of those spots and we'll be fine.

RQ: Any predictions on time?
BS:
I know it's going to be a fast race. I think the winner is going to run a really fast time. I don't know of (Reuben) Reina's record (14:36.8) is going to go down, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did. I think there will be a lot of people under 15:00. Last year, (Chris) Solinsky blew away everybody. I think this year there's a huge group of guys that could take it. I think there's at least seven guys that could win. I think this year is going to be really fast, depth-wise.

RQ: What is the goal time you are looking at?
BS:
I really don't know how fast 15:00 is on this course. I know it's really fast, no matter where you run 15:00. Anywhere from 15:20 to 15:00 will put you into the top ten, so if I can run anywhere around that, run in the top ten, that will be fine. I'll be really satisfied with that kind of race.

RQ: Is this going to be a race for place this year?
BS:
Yeah, definitely. One of my goals was to be the highest finishing runner from our school. Eric Henry, when he was a junior, [finished] 11th. I just want to beat that and at least get in the top ten. If I do that, I'll be really satisfied with that.
