Pre-Race Interview with Bradley Harkrader
By Ricky Quintana

Bradley Harkrader burst on to the scene this year by pushing Ryan Deak to a high-altitude sub-15:00 time at the Liberty Bell Invitational in September. A month later, he turned the tables, posting the fastest time ever at the Colorado state meet. We spoke to Thornton High School senior the day before he was to race in the National Finals.

Ricky Quintana: What do you think about this course?
Bradley Harkrader:
It's a really nice course. A few hills, some ups and downs, so I think it will be a really nice course.

RQ: You had that spectacular time at your state meet. What have you been doing since then?
BH:
I picked up my mileage again after state. I've just been trying to taper for Nationals and run here and hopefully, run really well.

RQ: Do you are in that kind of shape to run the same time you ran in Colorado?
BH:
I definitely think so. I've done a lot of work since then and I think I'm ready to go there again.

RQ: How did the Midwest meet go for you?
BH:
[The Regional] was OK. I didn't feel quite as good as I would have liked (he finished fourth in 15:19). I was kind of trying to train through it a little bit. I peaked a little bit, but I got here and this is the meet that really counts.

RQ: Where do you think the key places on the course are going to be?
BH:
I think the hills are the key place and I think everybody else thinks so too. I think this end stretch and kicking hard there is definitely a big part of the race.

RQ: Being from Colorado, are you excited about the course layout and the hills?
BH:
Yes, definitely. We have a lot of hills where I run. The altitude will definitely help.

RQ: Both you and Ryan Deak have signed with Colorado. Have you both discussed strategy?
BH:
Not together. I think we both are different runners. I have a different strategy and he has a different one. We're still racing each other. We haven't talked too much.

RQ: What do you think the [winning] time will be for this race?
BH:
I think the time will probably be right around 14:40.

RQ: Do you think you are in that kind of shape?
BH:
I think so. I think I can do it if I run my race, run strong, and just be willing to hurt more than everybody else.

RQ: What is your typical race strategy?
BH:
I like to go out a little bit slower and then run negative splits from there.

RQ: Do you think you can do that on this course?
BH:
I think so. I just have to be patient and not get caught up in all the hype or what everybody else is doing.
