Keally was favored to win the AAA Virginia State Meet but could only muster a second-place finish in 15:46, the sixth-fastest time of the day. Two weeks later at the Foot Locker South Regional Keally ran nearly a minute faster (14:54) to finish fourth, beating all of the Virginia runners in the race and earning his first trip to the Foot Locker National Finals. All of the qualifiers ran within 14 seconds of one another, with times ranging from 14:43 to 14:57. This year's group of runners is probably the strongest team every to represent the South at the National Finals.
