Ponte Vedra Beach, FL With 600 meters remaining, Kara Scanlin led the 2001 Foot Locker South Regional. Though she was outkicked by Laura Stanley (17:34) and Carly Matthews (17:35), Scanlin ran 17:36 to finish third and, most importantly, earn a ticket to Orlando for the National Finals. After finishing 23rd at last year's Nationals, Scanlin will return to Disney's Oak Trail Golf Course and attempt to improve on her 2001 showing. Scanlin has every reason to believe that she's a better runner than she was one year ago. One week before the South Regional, Scanlin ran 17:19 at the Florida State Meet, breaking Hillary White's overall state record of 17:25, set in 1998. She then improved her time at the South Regional, running 17:36 to last year's 18:03 runner-up performance (aided by the fact that the weather conditions were far better this year).
