The story of the season in Montana high school running has been the developing rivalry between senior Heidi Lane and freshman Zoe Nelson. The catch is that they've only raced twice. The two spent the season running on the same courses and in the same meets, but never against one another, until the state meet. Nelson won the first battle at the state meet, defeating Lane 17:29 to 17:31. Lane collapsed in the chute and was taken to the hospital but ended up being fine. In the second battle of the season - at the Foot Locker West Regional - Lane evened the score, beating Nelson by one place, 18:21 to 18:22.

Lane won the AA state cross country title as a sophomore and a junior.
