Stevens Point, WI Chris Solinsky began the 2001 cross country season with a goal of breaking 15:00 for 5k. He's come close, running 15:07 at the Wisconsin State Meet, and he'll have one more shot at it December 8 at the Foot Locker National Finals. Solinsky's 15:07 at the Wisconsin State Meet gave him the victory - by 32 seconds - and was a state 5k record for any course. The old record of 15:15 was held by Tim Hacker, who finished fourth at the 1980 Foot Locker (then Kinney) Nationals and won the 1985 NCAA Cross Country title. Solinsky finished 11th at the 2000 Foot Locker Midwest Regional, only three seconds away from a national qualifying spot. He erased last year's disappointment by finishing second at this year's Regional in 15:22, seven seconds behind winner Tim Moore. The only other national meet he's run this season was September's Great American Cross Country Festival. He finished third in the Race of Champions behind Ryan Deak and Kyle Perry, and ran the fifth-fastest time of the day (with Bobby Curtis and Joe Thorne running faster times in the seeded race). Other
