Each year the ninth- and tenth-place finishers in each regional race are named alternates, and it's usually just consolation prize. Brendan Sullivan is one of the few lucky alternates, however, who do end up running at Nationals. And after getting a call last week to say he would be running at the National Finals, Sullivan is probably breathing a huge sigh of relief, despite the very unfortunate circumstances which are allowing him to run. Sullivan ran well this season before finishing a disappointing second at the Class D New York State Meet. He finished fourth the next week at the All-State Federation Meet.
