After tying Alan Webb's 14:43 5k course record at McAlpine Park and winning the 2001 Foot Locker South Regional, Bobby Lockhart has put himself in good position to contend for a national title. Already on his third trip to Nationals, he is hoping to improve on his past performances of 13th (2000) and 16th (1999). Lockhart has increased his training significantly - from a high around 50 miles per week in 2000 to a high around 70 in 2001 - and believes that he's now on an entirely different level than he was last year at this time. He's remained undefeated this season and has improved his times significantly. At the 2000 Nationals, Lockhart went in with an aim of finishing in the top five but he let his nerves get the best of him and he ended up running below his potential.

Other Notes:
...Has verbally committed to attend the University of Wisconsin on a full scholarship next fall... Has won 12-straight Virginia State Meet titles (cross country, indoor track and outdoor track)... Lockhart cut his 2001 outdoor track season short after being plagued by mono, but he still ran 8:57 for 3,200m, won the Penn Relays High School Mile in 4:11.2, and picked up state titles in the 1,600m and 3,200m... Lockhart tried to simulate the warm conditions that the runners will probably experience on race day by wearing extra layers in training.
