Extends a Special Invitation to Washington DC Marathon Runners CINCINNATI, OHIO - (March 25, 2003) - The Greater Cincinnati Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon are offering special deals for runners from the cancelled Washington DC Marathon, to enter the May 4 Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon. Organizers of Cincinnati's Flying Pig Marathon are reducing the entry fee for Washington runners to the early registration price of $55. Further, the Greater Cincinnati Convention and Visitors Bureau is partnering with downtown Cincinnati hotels to offer Washington DC Marathon visitors a special room rate of 30-50% off the second or third night stay for the Marathon. To take advantage of the special rates, Washington runners need only provide proof of confirmation of their DC Marathon registration. "Cincinnati's Flying Pig Marathon is one of the Top 10 running events anywhere in the United States, " said Lisa Haller, president and CEO of the Greater Cincinnati CVB. "Our geographical location, coupled with our world-class hotels and area attractions make Cincinnati the perfect alternative for these runners." Organizers of the Washington DC Marathon called off the event last Thursday, citing security concerns in light of the start of the war against Iraq. The Washington Marathon was to be run Sunday, March 23. "It's important that we-as an industry, a community and as Americans-work together to maintain a sense of normalcy during these intense times," Haller continued. "Our goal in offering this alternative is first and foremost to support the running community and help ensure that our country remains open for business and operational despite the obvious challenges." Iris Simpson-Bush, the executive director of the Flying Pig Marathon, said, "We sympathize with the Washington marathon staff, who had to make a tough decision. But we also know there are hundreds of disappointed runners. We want to give them the chance to run the Pig and to achieve their running goals." The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon will be held May 4 with a full marathon, Ernst & Young 4-person relay, Outback 2-person relay and Papa John's 10K. Presenting sponsors are CoActive Marketing Group, Mercy Health Partners and Paycor. Gold sponsors are Asics, the City of Cincinnati, City Dash and Clif Bar. Media sponsors are the Cincinnati Business Courier, the Cincinnati Enquirer, WLWT-TV, WRRM-FM, WYGY-FM, WMOJ-FM, ChannelCincinnati.com, the Downtowner and Runner's World.
