Chris Fox caught up with Smoky Hill (CO) High School junior Katelyn Kaltenbach shortly after she won the 2003 Foot Locker Midwest Regional. Kaltenbach won her first state cross country title this fall after finishing second to her older sister Megan — a four-time state cross country champion — as a sophomore.

Fast-Women.com: It seemed like you stayed with the pack, and then made your move at the end...
Katelyn Kaltenbach:
I just went out conservatively, and then just kicked with about 300 to go.

FW: You were feeling pretty good?
KK:
Yeah, I felt really good.

FW: When was your last race?
KK:
State was October 25th.

FW: What did you do from then to now?
KK:
I just trained and did speed workouts.

FW: What's a normal week for you?
KK:
My high, during the summer, was 47 miles. An average is like low 30s.

FW: Did you have a goal today?
KK:
My first goal was top eight. To win was great.

FW: It must be a fun time going out to San Diego.
KK:
Yeah, I'm really excited. They put on a great event, and it's so fun to race with the best girls.

FW: Do you have a goal for nationals?
KK:
I want to get a top five and contend for the title.
