By the second mile, Deena Kastor was already out in front well ahead of the field.
She said that she was going for the win first, and if a record happened to fall in the process, she would be pleased.
Behind Kastor, there was a pack of four, however. R-L: Carrie Tollefson, Katie McGregor, Amy Rudolph, and Jen Rhines.
Tollefson and McGregor are Team USA Minnesota teammates, and Rhines and Rudolph have been competing against each other since high school.
Tollefson had a breakthrough in the summer of 2004 when she won the 1,500 at the U.S. Olympic Trials and then ran a PR to qualify for the Olympic team.
