Shortly after the halfway point, Johanna Nilsson and Arianna Lambie reportedly pushed the pace and pulled away from the field. Nilsson kept the hammer down and managed to put quite a bit of distance between herself and the second place runner.

This was her first NCAA cross country title, though, and she crossed the finish line in 19:33.9... ...a new course record for the 6K layout. Nilsson's older sister, Ida, who also ran for NAU, won two NCAA titles on the track. After finishing third a year ago, Columbia's Caroline Bierbaum moved up one spot to finish second.
