High school phenom Sarah Bowman, who will attend the University of Tennessee beginning in the fall, won the first heat of the junior 800m in 2:07.73 and advanced to the final. |
Kansas State's Morgan Bonds and BYU's Heidi Magill led on the first lap in the third heat of the junior 800. |
Heidi Magill won the third heat easily in 2:07.27. She and Bowman will be the favorites for the final. |
Rebekah Noble of Washington state, another high school phenom, finished second in the third heat in 2:09.66 and advanced to the final. |
A pack of girls - including (L-R) Michigan's Lisa Canty, Chantelle Drone, Marie Lawrence, and Jolee VanLeuven - ran together early on in the junior girls' 3,000. |

Lawrence led the pack as she, Dron, and Canty separated themselves from the field in the late stages of the race. |
The race came down to a kick between Lawrence and Canty. Lawrence was first across the line in 9:44.85 with Canty second in 9:45.91. VanLeuven came back to grab third. |
Amy Yoder Begley led early on in the women's 5,000 final. |
Shalane Flanagan ran in second place early on, and then moved up on Yoder Begley's shoulder. |
Eventually, Flanagan would have no more of the slow (relatively speaking) pace, and she moved into the lead. Carrie Tollefson and Shayne Culpepper followed. |

Flanagan soon began to pull away, and no one went with her. |
Carrie Tollefson and Amy Rudolph were among those who led the chase pack. Also in there were Lauren Fleshman, Shayne Culpepper, Amy Yoder Begley, Sara Slattery (mostly obscured) and Sara Bei. |
Two Amys - Yoder Begley and Rudolph - lead the pack, with Lauren Fleshman also right there. |
Flanagan's lead only grew as the sun went down, and with a mile to go, it became clear that it would be very tough for anyone to catch her. |
In the late stages of the race, Lauren Fleshman moved into second place. |

Amy Rudolph ran in third place. |
And Carrie Tollefson ran in fourth. |
With one lap to go, Flanagan was still out front, Fleshman continued to run in second, and Rudolph was in third. |
Flanagan won her first U.S. national title on the track in 15:10.96 and qualified for the World Championship team. Lauren Fleshman finished second in 15:16.80 and will be on the team if she can get the "A" standard within the qualifying window. |
Sara Bei, now running for Asics, finished a solid sixth in 15:24.74 in her first race as a professional runner. |
