Shortly after the halfway point, Johanna Nilsson and Arianna Lambie reportedly pushed the pace and pulled away from the field. Nilsson kept the hammer down and managed to put quite a bit of distance between herself and the second place runner. The Northern Arizona University (NAU) junior also won the 2002 NCAA Indoor mile title. This was her first NCAA cross country title, though, and she crossed the finish line in 19:33.9... ...a new course record for the 6K layout.
