Leghzaoui fell behind record pace during the first kilometer, but worked to get back on pace after that. Her husband, Mohammed Ar-Ar, did a good job of getting around the course and was able to shout encouragement from the sidelines. Asmae Leghzaoui ran the final four kilometers by herself in approximately 12:07.

Leghzaoui was chasing Lynn Jennings' 1996 course record of 15:21. The crowds near the finish line were very impressive, and Leghzaoui looked like she was flying as she headed down to the finish. Asmae Leghzaoui won the 2005 Freihofer's Run for Women in a new course record of 15:18.

Behind Leghzaoui, Kim Smith took second (15:41), Marie Davenport third (15:45), Merima Hashim fourth (15:49)... ...And Katie McGregor took fifth in 15:51, and was the top American finisher. Naomi Wangui of Kenya finished ninth in 16:26. Yimenashu Taye of Ethiopia finished 10th in 16:32.
