This race also served as the Armed Forces Championship. Just past the 1K mark, Colleen De Reuck had taken over the lead, Blake Russel ran in second place, and Jen Rhines in third. De Reuck, 40, was old enough to compete in the masters' race which would be held later in the day, but she is still among the best open runners in the U.S. De Reuck, Russell, and Rhines all played key roles in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in April 2004. De Reuck won the race, Russell led most of the way, and Rhines outkicked Russell for the third spot on the team.
