2005 marked the 10th edition of the Falmouth Mile. One of the top competitors in this year's field was 2004 U.S. Olympian Carrie Tollefson. Jenelle Deatherage, Tollefson's Team USA Minnesota teammate, was another top participant. Bermuda's Ashley Couper had her sights set on a Bermuda mile record, but the wind didn't cooperate. Recent Michigan graduate Lindsey Gallo had run the fastest time of anyone in the field this year; she just missed qualifying for the World Championships. Collette Liss of Indianapolis rounded out the small-but-competitive field.

With just over one lap to go, the top four were bunched together and it was anyone's race. Tollefson, the U.S.'s top 1,500m runner in 2004, had a slow start to the season after undergoing double hernia surgery. Deatherage finished eighth in the 1,500 final at this year's USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Ashley Couper went on to finish fifth in 4:48.17. There was a tremendous three-woman battle for the title on the last lap, and Carrie Tollefson was the first to break the tape in 4:32.25.
