The field gets ready to race. |
There were 10 runners (including the pacesetter), so they had to run two-to-a-lane in the two outside lanes. |
Burnett was an NCAA champion in the 800 for LSU. |
2004 Georgetown graduate Treniere Clement. |

Jen Toomey, who finished second at the 2004 U.S Olympic Trials in the 1,500 but didn't get to go to Athens... |
...because she didn't have a qualifying time. Prior to the Trials, Toomey was in the best shape of her life. She won the 800 and 1,500 titles at the 2004 USA Indoor Championships (and repeated in the 1,500 in '05). |
Ronetta Smith (in red) seemed to be having a very hard time setting the pace through 400 meters. |
Smith was already dropping back as the field approached the 400m mark. |
Because she wasn't ahead of the field, her exit from the race seemed to cause a lot of jostling, or it at least happened while... |

...the was already some jostling going on. Luckily, everyone stayed on their feet. |
One week earlier, at the Prefontaine Classic, both the women's 800m and 1,500m races had falls which influenced the outcome of the race. |
Kenia Sinclair (right) of Jamaica led through 400 meters. |
R-L: Sinclair, Kameisha Bennett, Marian Burnett, Jen Toomey, Neisha Bernard-Thomas, and Treniere Clement. |
Six of the nine runners in the field were recent college grads, so many of them had raced each other recently, and three of them had won NCAA titles in this event. |

With a head-on view, it wasn't immediately obvious who was leading up the homestretch, but it turned out to be Kenia Sinclair... |
...on the far right. She won the 800 in 1:59.10, a world-leading time. |
Sinclair, a native of Jamaica, ran for Seton Hall University, where she holds the indoor and outdoor school records in the 800. |
Treniere Clement (far left), who has been on a tear this year, ran another tremendous race to finish second in a PR 1:59.59. |
