In February, Flanagan won the USA 4K cross country title. Mestawot Tadesse slowed dramatically in the final laps and went from running in third early on to finishing eighth. Kim Smith continues to run in fifth place. Smith ran a New Zealand 10,000m record of 31:21 earlier in the track season. Amy Rudolph and Jen Rhines begin to pull away. Earlier in the season, Rudolph, a two-time U.S. Olympian, ran the third-best U.S. women's 10,000 time ever with a 31:18.96 debut.
