Many enthusiastic fans awaited Kiplagat at the finish line. Kiplagat crossed the finish line in 31:44, 34 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Jelena Prokopcuka, a four-time Olympian for Latvia, finished second in 32:18.

2004 World Cross Country champion Benita Johnson of Australia took third in 32:24. Loroupe, who is always a crowd favorite, had a great race to finish fourth in 32:52. Yuri Kano, an up-and-coming Japanese runner, was fifth in 33:05. Hilda Kibet of Kenya, who is Lornah Kiplagat’s cousin, finished sixth in 33:16. Two-time World Championships bronze medalist Masako Chiba of Japan crossed the line in 33:22 to take seventh.
