Hazel Clark won the 800m final in 1:59.74. It was her first outdoor national title since she won the 800 at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Q: What was the strategy you followed today?
Hazel Clark:
I knew it was a little risky here, but I still had to go wire-to-wire. I got out, took the lead, and just ran smooth. I tried to be in control at all times and have a good finish. And it went my way. I'm really excited about going to Worlds. My new training partner is Treniere Clement, and we've been pushing each other to the next level this year. She's been helping me with longer stuff, I've been helping her with shorter stuff, and I think the combination is making us both really strong.

Q: Why did you want to lead wire-to-wire?
HC:
I fell at Prefontaine and really hurt my neck. It was a bad fall. I didn't want to get messed up or tangled up, so I figured it was smart to get away, even though it's hard to run that way. I figured I was strong enough, even though I was getting the wind, and I would still be able to get the win.
